Design Furniture Made in Flanders

Auprès de mon arbre je vivais heureux, je n’aurais jamais du quitter mon arbre.

Erik Deforce Design Side board Fiamingi

Side board Fiamingi, hommage to Torbecchia

In the nineties, Deforce came out with a new series of design furniture conceived as an ambitious total concept. With a collection of cabinets, tables, wall furniture, chairs, coffee tables and small furniture, the customer could put together his own interior. For this new collection Deforce worked together with the furniture factory Meubelen Devriese from Hertsberge, under the logo D&D Design Furniture Made in Flanders. Devriese known for decades for making the frames for benches and chairs for the production of all Durlet carcasses, stood for high quality and finish off the new collection.

‘Near my tree I lived happily, I should never have left my tree’, quote by the French songwriter Georges Brassens stood for Deforces vision to take up sustainability, craftsmanship and the skillful processing of wood, top leather, and other natural materials into a design object that could be called ‘worthy of a tree’.

The D&D collection was stylistically related to the typical eclectic postmodern style of the nineties that was sweeping across Europe. The design language of the furniture had to be playful, frivolous and at the same time sustainable and classic. Some furnitures refer in their shape to icons of Italian mid-20th century design. As such a nod to the works of Ettore Sottssas is more than obvious. The side board Fiamingi shows an unmistakable tribute to the famous sixties sideboard of Giovanni Michelucci’s Torbecchia.

Other designs resemble conceptual remakes and show interesting references to or a playful use of the formal language of classicist 18th-century furniture (Pas de Deux chair), the Flemish monastic style (Fiamingi series) and even the exotic Japanese zen-style, as we find in some of the low coffee tables.

The solid oak dining room chairs, model Fiamingi, are a limited edition dating from the 90s. The design of the chairs and the quality of the wood and structure speak for themselves. The immediate impression one has when looking at it evokes the memory of the classic solid oak benches seen in monasteries and churches in Flanders, a design style that dates back over 200 years. The Fiamingi chair is a modern conceptualization of this monastic style that here reinforces and accentuates a triangular shape as the basic support structure to project the seat cushion forward in such a way as to give the impression that it is floating above the base of the chair.

This is an unusual set of chairs that would fit in both a more traditional grange country house style or a contemporary robust setting. Heavy and well made, their angular shape and floating seat give an impression of space while reflecting sturdiness and structural integrity. They would fit perfectly into the conversion of a residential church, echoing the historic design of such a space, while at the same time adding a contemporary twist to the theme.

They are striking chairs with simple lines and a pronounced character, which are also very interesting to photograph because they create many different angles and shapes that are a feast for the eyes.

The chair frames are made in solid oak. The material of the seat cushions is top quality leather, realized in collaboration with Durlet Company. Dimensions H86 X W48 X D50cm Seat height 47cm
